Refreshing Watermelon Margaritas

Margaritas are always a good idea. Always. I like them a bit dense in texture and slightly frozen. With that hint of lime and the fancy salt rimmed glass. The tequila should not overpower the fruit; but the fruit should also not overpower the tequila. They should each be felt evenly; and guys… this recipe is just that! (The sad part is; am actually drinking my nightly herbal tea as am typing this blog post, but let’s disregard that small fact…) I did have a margarita this afternoon, on my deck, and the weather was gloriously warm. Such a treat because we’ve had a very, very fickle Spring here in Toronto. Every time we think it has arrived it ducks right away. So am paranoid to say my usual “Spring has Sprung” and just take a good weather day as a good weather day and nothing more.


The idea of watermelon margaritas was inspired by Goop, the lifestyle site run by Gwyneth Paltrow. I actually really enjoy her cookbooks and collaborations. The food is simple, and the results delicious. I tried them with just watermelon a few weeks back and enjoyed them, for those who follow me on snapchat-you know what happened this morning… I sporadically decided to throw in 1 cup of strawberries. The watermelon-strawberry combo reminds me of my favorite Skittle flavor back when I was a self-professed sugar monster. Strawberries lend this drink amazing sweetness, but they’re also a bit sour, which plays wonderfully well with the watermelon, tequila & agave.


What I love about this recipe is that it’s not your usual sugary drink It baffled me to learn how many calories are hidden in all the sugary cocktails in existence. This recipe is refined sugar-free and doesn’t contain any liquid fructose, either. Liquid fructose syrup is a low-cost alternative that wreaks havoc in your health, and is commonly used at bars & coffee shops that offer specialty flavoured drinks. So the next time you’re craving an icy, cold drink or entertaining people over the weekend, I think you’ll enjoy this recipe. And your guests will, too!

Watermelon Margaritas

  • Servings: 4

  • 3 cups of organic watermelon
  • 1 cup of organic strawberries (best if frozen for that icy texture)
  • 3/4 cup white or silver tequila (I prefer silver tequila)
  • 1/4 cup organic lime juice
  • 1/4 cup raw agave nectar
  • 1/4 cup hot water


  1. Place the 3 cups of organic watermelon & the 1 cup of strawberries into your blender. You will be surprised-you don’t need any water. The watermelon has an incredibly high water content.
  2. Use a strainer to add the watermelon and strawberry juice into a pitcher to catch any pulp
  3. Prepare the agave: place the 1/4 cup hot water into a bowl or cup and use a spoon to stir & dissolve the 1/4 cup of agave in it.
  4. Once the agave dissolves, add the agave mixture, tequila & lime juice to the pitcher with the watermelon and strawberry juice. Stir all contents very well. The mix may be at room temperature because of the 1/4 cup of hot water in it. Serve cold. I prefer to chill it in the fridge for at least 2 hours, than to add ice cubes and water it down.
  5. For the salt rimmed glasses: Use a lime wedge and rub around the rim of the glass to soak it. In a small plate, add 1 tbsp of sea salt. Dip the outer edges of the glass rim gently tapping it against the dish to coat in sea salt.

Notes: You may omit the strawberries. I just happen to enjoy the flavor combo. Cheers!

Margaritas de Sandía

  • Servings: 4

  • 3 tazas de sandia (siempre compro fruta orgánica)
  • 1 taza de fresas
  • 3/4 taza de tequila blanca o silver
  • 1/4 taza de agave puro
  • 1/4 taza de agua caliente
  • 1/4 taza de jugo de limón verde

Sal y limón adicional para decorar el vaso.


  1. Dejar caer la sandia y las fresas a la licuadora. Licuar hasta que se forme un jugo. Usar un colador para pasar el jugo a un pichel y eliminar la pulpa.
  2. En un tazón, mezclar el agave con el agua caliente usando una cuchara para disolverlo bien.
  3. Dejar caer el agave, el jugo del limón verde, y el tequila. Mezclar bien y dejar enfriar en la refri antes de servirlo.

Para decorar los vasos: Usar una rodaja de limón para mojar la parte de afuera de la orilla del vaso. En un platito, se deja caer 1 cucharada de sal de mar. Luego se empapa la orilla del vaso (por fuera) y se va rotando hasta que se pegue la sal alrededor del vaso. Que lo disfruten!
